HI, NORMA, GILBERT TOOK MY ENGAGEMENT PICTURES WHEN I MARRIED YOUR BROTHER, LOUIS.
YOUR DAD, LOUIS, GAVE ME A RING IN 1968 -- A RING I HAVE WANTED TO GIVE TO IRENE ROSE. BUT THE NOTICE ON THE INTERNET INDICATES SHE HAS ALSO PASSED. I'M SORRY.
PLEASE CONTACT ME IF IT WOULD BE OKAY TO GIVE THIS (BERYL) RING TO ELIZABETH ANN, AS I BELIEVE IT SHOULD STAY IN YOUR FAMILY. AND PLEASE DO NOT TELL YOUR BROTHER ABOUT THIS NOTE.
PLEASE KNOW I AM THINKING OF YOU IN YOUR TIME OF GRIEF. WHEN MY FATHER PASSED IN 1995 MY MOTHER SAID, "YOU NEVER GET OVER GRIEF, YOU JUST GET USED TO HAVING IT AROUND."
SINCERELY, ESTELA DE LEON

When we read about the death of someone it often brings us sadness. However, it is comforting to know of the promises in the Bible. One such promise is mentioned at Isaiah 26:19 that reads, “Your dead ones will live. . . . They will rise up.” Psalm 37:29 further states: “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.” Such promises are very comforting during this time. However, Revelation 21:3 & 4 promises that even death will be done away with. It states, “With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

God bless the Barrera family from the Quintanilla family.

Gil Barrera was a God-send to me several years ago during a political campaign. Little did I know at the time that a world famous photographer was taking photos for my campaign literature. Sitting in his studio, he took great pains to use his vast skill in setting up his shots.

He astounded me when he asked me to do action shots around the city. I had no money that would enable me to pay for his services.

Nonetheless, Gil Barrera and I went all over the city taking photographs which ultimately enabled me to win a heavily contested Democratic Primary and Primary run-off.

Gil was a deeply sensitive, spiritual man. I know that heaven is shining just a little brighter this evening--God has his favorite photographer looking over His shoulder setting up his heavenly shots with the same precision that he did here on earth.

God bless you Gil,

Gabe Quintanilla and family

Dad, we love you very much. Thank you for all you've done for us. You'll be sorely missed. Whatever I accomplish in life is owed to you and mom. I am proud to have been named after you, I am proud to have named my son after you, and I am proud that your blood runs in our veins. Rest in peace with God. Your son, Gilbert Jr.

It's difficult to imagine a world without Gilbert Barrera. We knew him as the life of the party and the dynamo of The Light cityroom. When the editor yelled fire, Gil grabbed his trusty Speed Graphic or 2-and-a-quarter or 35mm camera and hit the ground running. You could always depend on Gilbert to return with winning photos that contributed to the quality of The Light and made all of us staffers proud. We had the privilege to work with Gil and will miss him terribly.
Gilbert, we hardly knew thee.
Vaya Con Dios.
